Nestled in the hills of Mumbai, near Vihar Lake, is the site that is destined to become famous throughout the world - the new center of Bollywood, aptly named Film City,
The 177 hectare site has for a long time been a favorite outdoor shooting location, and includes scenic areas regularly depicted in Bollywood movies. That tradition will remain, but now, the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation plans to upgrade and expand the studio in order to centralize film production, and will also add a Bollywood Museum and Theme Park, as well as the retail, entertainment and hotels that are required to support what will become a national and international attraction similar in scope and scale to Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
Film City Road reaches the Site from the Western Express Highway, and will eventually connect to the Eastern Express Highway. The proposed plan re-aligns the road as it passes through the Site in order to improve the operational separation of the Studio from the Theme Park and Entertainment environs which will be served by a nearby parking magazine and staff housing. The realignment of the road improves Site access, and the resulting natural lake not only creates a spectacular setting for the Theme Park, but is also an environmental asset.
